Maybe it’s because we spent countless hours hauling to horse shows together over the years, but my mother and I make great travel companions. Whether it’s just a quick overnight trip to Eureka Springs…or an adventure to Cuba…we always have a good time. Depending on your travel preferences, nearly any location can make a good mother-daughter trip destination. But you can’t go wrong with these 5 popular US locations perfect for a weekend trip (or longer!).
New Orleans, LA
Where fun, food, and culture meet! New Orleans is a perfect choice for a mother-daughter trip. Stay in the center of the excitement in the French Quarter…or pick more laidback accommodations in the Garden District. Either way you’ll have easy access to all New Orleans has to offer thanks to the city’s streetcars which are a convenient (and fun) way to get around. (Stay tuned for an upcoming blog post!) Soak up the historic atmosphere, the amazing food, and the incredible music. And don’t forget about beignets at Cafe du Monde!
Eureka Springs, AR
Set in the scenic Ozark mountains of Arkansas, Eureka Springs is a little off the beaten path but well worth the extra effort to get there. The town is full of historic hotels (some of them haunted!), tasty restaurants, and cute shops. Check out one of the natural spring-fed spas in town… after all the springs (and their reported healing properties) were what originally brought people to this area. Or take a walk on the wild side at Turpentine Creek big cat rescue. You can even stay in a safari tent and listen to the lions carol all night long! Check out this blog post on things to do in Eureka Springs.
Savannah, GA
Steeped in the elegance of the south, Savannah is full of architecture and history. Explore live oak lined boulevards. Browse through antique stores full of undiscovered treasures. Even the cemeteries are gorgeous! With the illustrious Savannah College of Art and Design located here, there are always opportunities to check out art exhibits, theatre, and film. Take some time to get out on the water and visit one of the many islands surrounding the city.
Napa Valley, CA
If wine is your thing, you can’t go wrong with Napa Valley. Beautiful scenery, exquisite wines, and incredible food. Drive yourself around and explore at your own pace…or consider hiring a driver or joining a tour so that you don’t have to worry about whether to have another glass of wine. When/If you get tired of wine tasting, take time to get out into nature with a walking, biking, or horseback tour. Or if you’re up for a little adventure, you can take a hot air balloon ride over the vineyards!
Asheville, NC
With a vibrant art scene and top notch restaurants, Asheville, NC, is a perfect place for a mother-daughter trip. As an added bonus the city is surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains offering a variety of activities if you want to spend some time in nature. There’s the usual hiking, biking, and watersports…but you can also meet hawks close up in a falconry session, race each other on side-by-side ziplines, or get a lesson in foraging. Make sure to reserve a day to explore the impressive Biltmore Estate. Built by the Vanderbilts in 1895, it looks like it was plucked straight out of a fairytale!
