I admit, as an equestrian, I tend to seek out horses wherever I travel. I could watch horses school for hours and not get bored. But…I understand that not everyone feels the same way. Vienna, Austria
Tucked among the city’s beautiful architecture, parks, museums, cathedrals, and winter markets…the Spanish Riding School has been preserving the Lipizzaner breed and classical training methods for centuries. Even non-equestrians in your travelling group will appreciate touring the grounds and seeing these incredible horses at work.
Jerez de la Frontera, Spain
An easy day trip from Seville, Jerez is home to the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Arts which gives tours and shows year round. Or time your visit for the Jerez Horse Fair in May where the whole community comes together to celebrate the regal Andalusian horse. For non-horsey types, Jerez is also home to a booming sherry industry and plenty of historic buildings to explore.
London, England
Horses have long been a part of London’s history and you can still find plenty of equines around. Between enjoying exceptional (and often free!) museums…attending amazing performances…and appreciating the city’s long and varied history, you can take photos with mounted troops, visit the Queen’s carriage horses, watch horse races and polo matches, and even go riding in the city parks. Iceland
With their small size and smooth gaits, Icelandic horses are accessible for even the most inexperienced rider. And there’s no better way to see the beauty of the Icelandic landscape than from the back of one of these horses!
African Safari
Dream of galloping along side giraffes and zebras in Africa…but your travel companion isn’t much of a rider? No worries, most horse back safari companies can design a custom itinerary that mixes riding and non-riding experiences to make sure everyone has a great time.
Paris, France
Though Paris is the original home of the horse circus, there aren’t many horses left in the city these days. However, several great and easy daytrips can satisfy your need for some horse-time. Including the riding academy and carriage museum in Versailles…and the museum of the horses and stables at Chantilly. Plus, in 2024, Paris will be hosting the summer Olympics…complete with horse events. For non-horse lovers, Paris offers a wide variety of experiences including museums, historic buildings, food and drink, and much, much more!
