Thanks to unlimited data plans and free wi-fi hotspots, cell phones have become an indispensable travel companion.  Check out these great apps that will make your life easier while exploring the world!

Google Maps

Figuring out how to get around a new area is one of the hardest parts of travelling.  Especially if you don’t speak the language.  Google Maps offers reliable directions whether you’re in a vehicle or on foot.  No wi-fi or data required either.  You can download maps directly to your phone before your trip for off-line use.

TouchNote

Share your adventures with friends and family back home by sending personalized postcards designed using your own travel photos.  No stamps or a trip to the post office necessary.  TouchNote will print your one of a kind postcard and drop it in the mail for you.

Duolingo

Lear the language before you go with Duolingo.  This free language learning app has a wide selection of languages to choose from and is appropriate for both kids and adults alike.

Google Translate

Don’t worry if you’re struggling with the language.  Google Translate’s got your back.  It can translate both written and spoken words from one language to another.  Just like Google Maps, you can pre-download languages in order to use the app off-line.

What’s App

Many people choose to purchase a local SIM card for their phone or enroll in a global plan from their provider.  But…if you have access to wi-fi, you can use What’s App to call and send text messages without added charge.

Hopper

It can be hard to decide exactly when to purchase a plane ticket.  Inevitably the price drops right after you’ve booked your trip!  The Hopper app tracks flight prices and helps you predict when it’s the best time to buy.

Uber

With service in over 80 countries, Uber is one of the most widely available ride share services available.

Converting currency can be challenging.  XE Currency gives you up to date conversions right at your fingertips.

If you’re a US citizen, the State Department’s Smart Traveler app can help you sort out visa requirements, vaccine recommendations, travel warnings, and other details.  You can also register your trip details to make it easier to get help should an emergency arise.

The Fork

Similar to Open Table, The Fork is an easy way to make restaurant reservations in Europe.  Some places even offer discounts if tables are reserved through the app.

AllTrails

Enjoy hiking?  The AllTrails app provides useful details on a huge database of hiking trails including maps, photos, reviews, and current trail conditions.

Bring Fido
