The world has a plastic problem.  A big one.  We consume huge amounts of plastic…and very little of it ends up in a recycling bin.  Increasingly large amounts of plastic are finding their way into our oceans (more than 8 million tons a year!), impacting both the animals that live there and the beaches we love to visit.  Thankfully there are lots of easy ways that you can help decrease your plastic footprint when you travel (and every day!).

1.  Bring your own reusable straw

Straws are one of the worst offenders when it comes to plastic litter.  Even if you need a straw, it’s easy to eliminate the use of plastic.  Paper options are available and many restaurants that are eliminating plastic straws are switching to these.  Even better, invest in a reusable straw that you can wash and use again and again.

2.  Bring your own reusable water bottle

Plastic water bottles are another big contributor to plastic litter.  They’re quick to grab on the go and carry around, but you can easily substitute a sturdier, reusable water bottle and help eliminate a huge amount of plastic waste.  If you’re travelling to an area where the water quality is questionable, many hotels and restaurants will have filtered water that you can refill your bottle with…or invest in a filter bottle that will do the work for you.

If you’re headed to the beach, consider taking your own reusable cup.  Most resorts will mix drinks using your own cup…and, if you take an insulated one, you’ll have the added benefit of keeping your beverage of choice cold for a lot longer than a flimsy plastic cup.

3.  Switch to solid toiletries

All those little plastic shampoo, conditioner, and soap bottles add up over time.  You can refill these bottles and help cut down on plastic waste…but, even better, you can easily switch many of your toiletries to a solid form.  Solid shampoos, conditioners, and soaps come in a countless variety of types and scents.  Plus, if you’re carrying on your luggage, it makes security a whole lot easier! Personally, I’m a fan of the LUSH product line, but there are tons of different companies out there.

4.  Switch to a bamboo toothbrush

Your toothbrush might not be your first thought when it comes to plastic consumption.  While these are not one use items, most people do go through several every year…and it’s easy to switch them out to a more eco-friendly option.  Bamboo toothbrushes have become quite popular recently and it’s easy to find one that fits your needs.  Look for one that has biodegradable bristles to maximize your impact (non-biodegradable bristles should be pulled out with pliers for recycling prior to disposing of the toothbrush).

5.  Bring your own reusable shopping bag

Inevitably you’re going to buy something during your travels.  Instead of accepting a plastic bag to carry your items around in, pack your own reusable shopping bag.  These are inexpensive to purchase and some even fold down to pocket size for easy packing.

And…pick up plastic trash on your travels

Make it a habit to help keep the environment clean by picking up any litter (especially plastic) that you see and dispose of it correctly.  It’s everyone’s responsibility to keep the places we love pristine for the next visitors.
