I love the southwest. There’s something comforting about all the red rocks and open sky…the pockets of plant and animal life managing to thrive despite overwhelming odds stacked against them…. But when it comes to exploring, I’m a flat land kind of girl. I can’t help it. Having grown up in the plains, steep canyons are just not a part of my DNA. Just ask my guide at the Grand Canyon. I made it about one switch back down the wall and promptly retreated back up to the top. One hike I did enjoy though was Canyon de Chelly in Chinle. A gentle introduction to canyon hiking with all the beauty, culture, and history that you expect from Arizona. It’s an easy, great hike for the entire family.
About Canyon de Chelly
Canyon de Chelly National Monument is located outside Chinle, AZ on Navajo tribal lands. The park is free to visit and offers a rim road with incredible scenic views as well as a hiking trail down to the canyon floor. Any use beyond the marked hiking trail requires a local guide.
White House Ruin Trail
The hike is easy to moderate, though it does have a few steep areas and traverses some slick rocks in places. It winds itself gently down the canyon through red rock formations and ends at the ruins of cliff dwellings built into the side of the canyon. The ruins are fenced off for their protection, but they’re still well worth the walk!
Spider Rock
While you’re at Canyon de Chelly, keep an eye out for a tall double rock spire. This is Spider Rock. The legendary home of Spider Woman who spun the universe into existence and taught the Navajo how to weave. You can read more of her story here.
