What to Include in a Day Pack for your Dog

With the weather starting to warm up, it’s a great time to head out and about with your favorite pup!  Whether it’s a long hike in the mountains or a trip to the local winery, don’t forget to pack a few doggie essentials in your day pack to make the experience as comfortable as possible for your four legged friend!

Treats

Always pack some high value treats when you go out with your dog!  There are lots of distractions out there and you want to make sure you can always get your dog’s attention.  Training treats are small and easy to pack…hot dogs (you can dehydrate them in the microwave to make them more portable) are great options as well.  Make sure to reward good behavior frequently!

Collapsible water bowl (and water if needed)

Unless you want to share your water bottle with your dog, make sure to pack them their own bowl.  There are lots of collapsible options that won’t take up much space.  If you’re not sure if there will be a clean, safe water source wherever you’re headed, make sure to pack enough water for both you and your dog.  It’s not a good idea to let dogs drink out of puddles or streams as they can catch diseases such as Leptospirosis and Coccidia from untreated water sources.

Protective gear

Depending on where you’re headed, make sure that you have appropriate protective gear for your pup.  Consider a lifejacket for boating trips…booties for rough terrain or hot asphalt/concrete…and even goggles if there is going to be a risk of debris such as sand or grass that could get in your dog’s eyes.  Light colored dogs may need sunscreen in the summer or at altitude, especially on sensitive areas such as their nose.

Poop bags

A necessity no matter where you go!  Poop happens.  Be a responsible owner and clean up after your dog.  And make sure you dispose of your full poop bags in an appropriate trash bin…don’t leave them at the side of the trail for other people to have to clean up.

Vaccine records

Some places require proof of vaccination (especially rabies vaccines) before your dog is welcome to enter.  Be prepared and have a copy of your up to date vaccine record with you.
