With over 4.5 million visitors per year, Zion is one of the most popular National Parks in the United States. Here are some tips to help you avoid the crowds!
Set your alarm
Save the sleeping in for another vacation because one of the best ways to beat the crowds at Zion National Park is to get up early. Park shuttles start running at 6am during the busy season (and 7am in the slower season). Being on one of the first shuttles into the park means that you’ll be able to enjoy some of the most popular areas while they’re still quiet and serene. As an added bonus, this is one of the coolest times of day as well (which is important as temperatures can soar during mid-day in the summer).
Stay in the park
If you really want the chance to explore the canyon when there’s the least amount of people present, consider staying at Zion Canyon Lodge which is located within the park. The canyon clears out considerably when the shuttles stop running around 8pm during high season (and around 7pm during the slower season). Entrances to both the Emerald Pools trails and Angels Landing are both easily accessible from the lodge by foot, bike, or shuttle.
Staying in one of the campgrounds can be a great choice as well. The most popular campgrounds are located just outside the entrance to the main canyon, providing easy access to hiking trails and scenic view points…as well as the shops and restaurants at the park entrance. Additionally, the campground offers an area for ranger talks (which usually take place in the evening) and access to the Watchman Trail.
(Note that cars are not allowed on the main canyon road during peak season…even at night. So you’ll be restricted to bicycles or walking.)
Visit Kolob Canyons
When most people think of Zion National Park, they think about the main canyon. But there’s actually a whole separate section of the park called Kolob Canyons…which gets a lot less visitors. Kolob Canyons offers a scenic drive and hiking trails for those who are looking to get away from the crowds.
Visit during off season
Over 70% of Zion Canyon’s visitors come to the park during a six month period of time (from April to September). If you want to beat the crowds, consider visiting in the slower season. The park is beautiful in the winter months! Just make sure to pack warm clothes!!!
