Whittier is a common starting and ending point for many one-way Alaskan cruises. However, to get there, you’ll need to fly into Anchorage…which is approximately 60 miles away. Thankfully there are a variety of easy ways to transfer between the two!
Train
One of the most popular ways to make the trip is by train. The scenic Glacier Discovery route makes daily trips between Anchorage and Whittier during the summer which are conveniently timed for local sightseeing activities and cruise ship arrivals and departures. In fact, the train will deliver you right to the cruise terminal! The trip takes about 2.5 hours each direction. To find out more, check out this website.
Bus
Another convenient way to travel between Anchorage and Whittier is by bus. The Park Connection runs a direct bus between Anchorage and Whittier on days that cruise ships are docked.
If you’d like to make a day of it and do a little sightseeing along the way, consider a transport/tour combo from a company such as Alaska Cruise Transportation. They have a variety of options which include narrated tours with stops at locations such as the Portage Glacier, the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center, Alyeska Mountain Aerial Tram, and Anchorage city tours. Do be sure to check the company’s schedule as many of these tours only run on days that cruise ships are docked.
Car
If you want to be in control of your own schedule or have a large group, it’s possible to rent a car for a one-way trip between Whittier and Anchorage. However, be aware that you’ll need to pass through the one-way Whittier Tunnel which can extend your drive times. Check out the tunnel schedule here to help with planning.
