While it’s not the most exciting thing to consider while trip planning, travel insurance is probably one of the most important decisions you can make. Hopefully you won’t need it, but if you get hurt and need medication attention, require evacuation due to a natural disaster, need to cancel your trip, or even have lost luggage, travel insurance can get you the help you need and save you a ton of money. (For a discussion on why travel insurance is important, check out this blog post.)
Travel insurance is even more important if you’re planning on doing any horseback riding while on vacation! Horses can be unpredictable and accidents resulting in injury are not uncommon.
But did you know that not all travel insurance policies cover horseback activities? It’s important to closely read your travel insurance documents to make sure riding horses (or whatever activities you plan on doing during your trip) is covered.
Two reputable travel insurance companies that do include horseback riding activities as part of their standard insurance packages are World Nomads and Allianz. (Note that more intense equine activities such as rodeo and/or polo may require upgraded coverage. Always ask before purchasing a policy if you are unsure if your activity is covered.) If you are headed somewhere particularly remote or risky, you may want to consider additional rescue and evacuation insurance provided by a company such as Global Rescue.
Just because you have travel insurance that includes horseback riding, that doesn’t mean you can forget about safety. Appropriate equipment is a must…and that includes a riding helmet! If possible, bring your own helmet and footwear from home to guarantee a correct fit.
