Learn from others’ mistakes (mostly mine!) and avoid these common tourist missteps in London.
Staying too far outside the city center
There’s no debating the fact that London is an expensive place to stay. It can seem tempting to stay further outside the city center to save money. However, consider how much money and time it will take to travel in to the city each and every day…often times at rush hour when public transportation is packed. You’re better off staying closer to the tourist attractions even if it costs a bit more.
Not wearing comfortable shoes
Getting around London involves a lot of time on your feet. Make sure you pick comfortable shoes that can stand up to all the walking! Your feet will thank you! (While you’re out walking, you might want to try one of these great self-guided walking adventures: Thames/Southwark, Westminster.)
Forgetting your umbrella
On average, London experiences over 100 rainy days per year! Don’t let a little rain spoil your plans. Pick up a small umbrella before your trip…and don’t leave it behind. Nothing like getting soaked because you forgot your umbrella back at the hotel room!!!
Not taking advantage of free attractions
London is full of incredible, free attractions…including most of the major museums. It’s a mistake not to take advantage of these opportunities. Check out something outside your comfort zone, even if just for a few minutes. You might discover something new that you love! (Check out this blog post on free things to do in London.)
Not utilizing public transportation
The black cab may be iconic, but it’s not the most economical way to travel in the city. London has a great public transportation system that can get you pretty much anywhere you need to go…a lot cheaper than a traditional black cab. Get an Oyster card and take full advantage of London’s subway, train, and bus system…like a real Londoner. (Check out this blog post on how to use the London Underground as a tourist.)
Planning too much in one day
With so much to experience, it’s easy to want to pack too much into each and every day of your trip. Take some time to really consider what you want to see most and prioritize these experiences. Between jetlag and lots of walking, you’ll be surprised at just how tired you might be…and no one wants to be rushing around, exhausted, on their vacation!
Poor escalator etiquette
Stand right, walk left!
