I might be indulging in a bit of hyperbole, but only a bit. For the Arabian horse community, the Scottsdale show really is one of the highlights of the year. People (especially us snowbirds escaping the still frozen north!) come from all over to watch the best of the breed compete in a wide variety of disciplines, shop for the latest trends, and mingle at barn parties…all under the warm Arizona sun. But you don’t have to be an insider to get in on all the fun!
The Scottsdale Arabian Horse show has been taking place in one form or another since 1955. Currently held each February at Westworld in Scottsdale, AZ, over 2000 horses take part in world class competitions ranging from halter…to equitation…to reining…to jumping…and tons more!
In addition, the show offers educational opportunities such as lectures, demonstrations, and barn tours…as well as social events including barn parties and kid’s activities.
With so much going on, the choices can seem a bit overwhelming, especially if you’re new to the Arabian horse community. Keep an eye out for these popular, not-to-be-missed classes: native costume, sidesaddle, park horse, liberty, gambler’s choice jumpers, freestyle dressage, and working cow. While these are just a fraction of the disciplines on exhibit at the show, they are an exciting introduction to the versatility of the Arabian horse.
Show details including dates, times, and entry costs can be found on the Arabian Horse Association of Arizona’s website here.
